About the Course

The BTEC is a two year course which is designed for students who would like to pursue a career within the Sport and Exercise Science industry.

It is expected students will achieve Grade 5 in PE or Grade 5 Science

Over two years students will study the following mandatory units:

  • Unit 1 -Sport and Exercise Physiology
  • Unit 2 -Functional Anatomy
  • Unit 3 – Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Unit 4 – Field and Laboratory-based Fitness Testing
  • Unit 5 – Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Unit 6 – Coaching for Performance and Fitness

As well as the following additional units:

  • Unit 7 – Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Unit 8 – Specialised Fitness Training

These units are designed to challenge, inspire and prepare the candidate for university and the workplace. We expect students to pick at least 1 A-Level course to complement the BTEC such as Biology.

The BTEC course is a mixture of external and internal assessments.

  • 3 Units – Written exams (Anatomy, Physiology and Psychology)
  • 5  Units – Coursework

The internal units (coursework) will be set regularly throughout the 2 year course and internally graded by the school as well as externally verified by the exam board. The written exams will be taken in either January or May.

All assessment are graded as a PassMerit, or Distinction.

 

Students will also have the opportunity to develop additional skills such as coaching and first aid awareness.

This qualification is designed to support progression to employment and university. It supports learners as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give learners an advantage in applying for a range of Higher Apprenticeships such as sport and fitness training, coaching, and sports performance research.

The qualification is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant sports and sport-related courses. Taken alongside an A Level in Sociology, it could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Social Science.

For example, Physiotherapist, Sports Psychologist, Sports Analyst, Coach, Biochemist, Strength & Conditioning Coach, Osteopath, Personal Trainer, Teaching, Sports Scientist, Physical Rehab, Mental Health Professional, Sports Statistician.
