Science CurriculumKey Stage ThreeDuring years 7 to 9 Science is taught in broadly mixed ability groups and has a strong emphasis on practical work and scientific thinking skills. Results are historically very strong with approximately 90% of students achieving level 5 or above by the end of the key stage each year. The materials and assessment are under constant review to keep them in line with national developments within Science education.
Key Stage FourPupils take the AQA Suite of Science examinations, choosing between Core Science GCSE (Y10) with Additional Science GCSE (Y11), or separate Sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Regardless of this choice, all groups are taught by three teachers, one for each Science discipline. In addition to this, Astronomy GCSE is offered. Results are strong with around 70% of pupils achieving grade C or above each year.
Key Stage Five To allow a smooth transition from GCSE, the AQA suite of specifications is used in all three Sciences at A’ level. A’ level uptake is always strong with two groups in each subject. Many students go on to take Science related courses at University including the study of Medicine, Veterinary Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Engineering etc. In all Sciences, coursework is assessed through continuous internal assessment. |
Science College StatusDuring 2009 the school was designated as a Science Specialist College and this will be the vehicle to release the full potential of the department both within the school and in outreach at a local and international level. Development of our own Science provision includes broadening the range of courses offered, a development of our resources, links with industry and tertiary education and the development of cross-curricular links. We are also exploring many outreach’ opportunities into our feeder primary schools, the development of adult and family education, gifted and talented provision and the development of the international links created by our Languages Specialism. |
